Trigram Robot SUMO được tiến hành theo thể thức đồng đội, với mỗi đội gồm 2 học viên tham gia và 1-2 giáo viên huấn luyện. Có hai loại: trường tiểu học và trung học. Học sinh tham gia phải hiện đang theo học tại trường tiểu học hoặc trung học cơ sở vào ngày diễn ra cuộc thi. Đấu trường thi đấu là một nền tảng hình tròn có đường kính 2,8 mét. Nền tảng cách mặt đất khoảng 35 cm và khu vực bắt đầu của robot có hình thang nằm cách mép 50 cm. Khu vực bên trong dây chuyền chuẩn bị đến rìa bục là khu vực bắt đầu cho các robot, với các robot của mỗi đội được đặt đối diện nhau trong khu vực này.
